Next DB — Documentation

Why Choose It

Next DB suits Joomla sites that want database administration inside the Joomla admin, with access control and an audit trail around it.

It is likely a good fit if

  • You run Joomla 4, 5 or 6 on PHP 8.1 or higher
  • You want to give people database access without handing out phpMyAdmin credentials
  • You work with MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL or SQLite
  • You need a record of who changed what, and when
  • You want to publish read-only query results on your site frontend

It may not be the right fit yet if

  • You are on PHP 8.0 or earlier. Joomla 4 on PHP 7.4 is not a supported configuration.
  • You rely on MS SQL Server, Oracle or DB2. They may connect, but have not been hardened or tested end-to-end. Use them at your own risk.
  • You need NoSQL. MongoDB, Elasticsearch and similar stores are out of scope.
  • You need to browse across PostgreSQL schemas. The table list reflects the connection's current schema; cross-schema browsing isn't supported yet.
  • You need to edit Joomla's core tables on the site database. They are always write-protected, Super Users included.
  • You need Data Views on the Joomla site database. It can never back a Data View; use a separate connection.
  • You need to import files over 32 MB. Larger files are rejected.
  • You need structure changes on MySQL/MariaDB to roll back. Each one is applied immediately.
  • You need AI features today. They are Coming soon.
