Use Cases
These are the situations we had in mind when building Next DB. They are our suggestions, not a limit. Your site will work differently, so adapt them to your needs, and you may well find a use for it that we haven't thought of.
Giving a developer limited database access
- Situation: someone needs to inspect or fix data, but phpMyAdmin credentials would grant far too much power.
- How it can help:
- Open the database from inside the Joomla admin
- Limit connections, tables and operations with a profile
- Grant read-only access to a single table, for example
Working on a live site
- Situation: you need to look at production data and make occasional changes without breaking the site.
- How it can help:
- Rely on core-table protection, which applies to Super Users too
- Turn on the SQL console's read-only toggle while exploring
- Preview structure changes before applying them
Managing several databases
- Situation: you work with a staging server or other databases alongside the Joomla site database.
- How it can help:
- Attach MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL or SQLite as named connections
- Give a database administrator full rights on a staging connection only
- Use the same editor, console and export tools on each one
Sharing administration without Super User
- Situation: a team member should manage some Next DB areas, but should not become a Super User.
- How it can help:
- Grant areas and actions one by one with delegated management
- Let someone create and test connections but not delete them
- Keep no-escalation rules in place
Answering "who changed what, and when"
- Situation: several people touch the data and you need a record of it.
- How it can help:
- Review before and after row snapshots in the audit trail
- Choose what is recorded and how long it is kept with audit policy
- Keep sensitive values out of the log with redaction
Publishing live data on your site
- Situation: visitors or members need to see query results, but should not get backend access.
- How it can help:
- Publish a read-only Data View through a Joomla menu item
- Control who sees it with access levels, groups or individual users
- Offer search, auto-refresh and a phone layout
Moving data in and out
- Situation: you need a dump, a CSV for someone else, or a migration script to run.
- How it can help:
