Why Choose It
Smart Local Google Analytics suits Joomla sites that want Google Analytics 4 or Google Tag Manager to load only after a visitor consents, with everything running on their own server.
It is likely a good fit if
- You run Joomla 4.x, 5.x or 6.x on PHP 8.3 or higher
- You use GA4 or Google Tag Manager
- You want to host the tracking script on your own server
- You want to control the consent dialog's look, position and text
- You want to choose which pages and user groups are tracked
It may not be the right fit yet if
- You need a built-in way for visitors to revoke consent. There is no revoke button. Visitors clear their cookies or wait for the cookie to expire. See How Consent Works.
- You need location detection based on IP address. Geo-detection uses browser language, which is an approximation and not the visitor's physical location.
- You need local script hosting but cannot remove template tracking code. Local hosting works only in managed mode, not in legacy mode. Legacy mode also does not manage the GTM noscript iframe.
- You cannot make the script folder writable or allow outbound HTTPS to Google. Local script hosting needs both.
- You want to keep another Google Analytics consent manager running. Running two causes conflicts.
- Your page caching cannot be adjusted. The dialog may not appear if a cached page is served first. See the FAQ.
