Benefits
These are the benefits we see in Next Exams' design. What you gain depends on how you assess people, so treat this list as a starting point: adapt the software to your needs and you may find benefits of your own.
For authors and teachers
- Reusable questions
- Questions live in a bank, independently of exams
- Editing a question updates it everywhere, except in attempts already under way
- Less marking
- Fourteen of the fifteen question types grade themselves
- Essays queue for a human marker
- Evidence about your questions: item analysis shows difficulty and discrimination
- Existing work carries over: import from CSV, Aiken, GIFT, Moodle XML or QTI 2.1
For examinees
- Answers are kept: the runner autosaves, so someone who closes the browser can return and continue, until the time limit, closing time or inactivity period is reached
- A paper that doesn't shift: the question set is frozen at start, so editing the exam never changes a running attempt
- No half-marked papers: review stays locked until every essay is marked
- Clear next steps: per-subject breakdowns name the areas to revise
- An accessible exam flow: remediated to WCAG 2.1 AA, based on our own testing
- Works with scripting off: the runner still submits without JavaScript
For invigilators
- See who needs help first: the live board puts whoever needs a human at the top
- Act quickly: one-click help for a person or a whole room
- No Joomla account needed: invites work by link, PIN or QR code, always scoped to a single exam
- A record of what happened: every action is written to an audit log
For administrators and developers
- Assessment stays on your site: questions, results and personal data stay in your own Joomla installation
- Enable only what you use: the App Manager switches twenty-one optional capabilities off without deleting data
- Trusted scoring: the clock, question set and score live on the server, so a tampered browser changes nothing
- Privacy tools: GDPR export and erasure through Joomla's privacy component
- Open to integration: LTI 1.3, signed webhooks and a REST API
- Open licence: GNU General Public License v2 or later
