Authoring

Building and maintaining the question bank behind every exam.

Question Bank — nine question types, a hierarchical subject tree, tags, custom fields, KaTeX maths, a curated media library, and question versioning with an approval workflow.
Exam Builder — fixed questions, random pool rules, sections, shuffling, per-question points, per-exam result policy and an auto-close policy for abandoned attempts.
Import and export — CSV with your own column mapping, Aiken, GIFT, Moodle XML and QTI 2.1, in both directions.

What the examinee experiences, and the rules the server enforces around it.

Exam Runner — server-authoritative timing, delta autosave, single-page or one-question-per-page layouts, pause and resume, practice mode, mark-for-review, and a no-JavaScript fallback that still submits.
Access gates — the five access types, opening and closing windows, attempt caps and cooldowns.
Integrity signals — detection-only focus-loss, paste, tab-switch and fullscreen-exit counters. Recorded and shown; never used to fail anyone automatically.

Turning submitted papers into scores, feedback and evidence.

Grading and results — automatic grading with partial credit, manual essay marking, locked review, result-release timing and per-subject breakdowns.
Analytics and reports — item difficulty and discrimination, per-student reports, CSV export and scheduled email reports.

Roles and permissions — Next Exams' own role system, granting actions per feature to Joomla users or groups, independent of Joomla's global ACL.
Cohorts and enrollment — hand-picked rosters, mirrored Joomla user groups, email invitations for people without accounts, and per-exam access rules.

LTI 1.3 — launch exams from an LMS, choose them with Deep Linking, and pass scores back to the gradebook.
Webhooks — HMAC-signed outbound HTTP notifications on submission, grading and certificate issue, with retry and a delivery log.
API tokens — default-deny bearer tokens for the JSON API, scoped per capability.
Notifications — per-event email templates, merge tokens, and a delivery queue with retry.

App Manager — switch any of twenty-six capabilities on or off. Disabling hides the interface and blocks the endpoints without deleting data.
