Time zones

Teams are often spread over several time zones. Next Boards shows every date and time in the time zone of the person looking at it, so "today", "overdue" and "due at 15:00" mean the right thing for each of them.

Which time zone is used

For each person, the first of these that is set:

  1. The Time Zone of their Joomla user account (Users → the user → Basic Settings, or their profile on the site).
  2. The site's time zone (System → Global Configuration → Server → Website Time Zone).
  3. UTC.

The time zone of the device or browser is deliberately not used. Someone travelling with a laptop keeps seeing their own working day, and two people who share a time zone setting always see the same thing.

To change what you see, change the time zone of your Joomla user account and reload Next Boards.

What follows your time zone

Where Behaviour
Due times A card due at 15:00 Berlin time shows as 09:00 for a colleague in New York.
"Today", "Overdue", "Due soon", "This week" Counted from your own midnight, on card badges, in My Tasks, in filters and on the dashboard.
Planner Your blocks are laid out on your own day.
Due reminders and overdue notices Sent according to each recipient's own time zone.
Daily e-mail digest Sent after 08:00 in the recipient's time zone.
Activity and comments "2 hours ago", and dates in your zone.

What does not shift

Some dates are calendar days, not moments in time. They read the same for everyone, wherever they are:

Date Why
A due date without a time "Due on 14 March" means 14 March for everybody. It is not turned into the 13th or the 15th in another zone. It counts as overdue for each person once that day is over where they are.
A card's start date A calendar day.
A date custom field A calendar day.
A checklist item's due date A calendar day.

If a deadline is a real moment, such as a release at 17:00 Central European Time, tick Include a time on the due date. Then it is shown to each person at the matching local time.

What uses the site's time zone

Scheduled automations run in the site's time zone, because a command such as "every Monday at 08:00" belongs to the board, not to one person. The automation editor shows the site's zone and tells you what that time is in yours.

Date and time format

Dates and times are written the way your Joomla language writes them: the order of day and month, 12-hour or 24-hour clock, the names of months and weekdays, and the first day of the week. Switch your Joomla language and the calendars follow.

Calendar feed

Timed events in the calendar feed are written in universal time (UTC), so your calendar application shows them at the right local time on its own. Due dates without a time are all-day events.
