FAQ

Getting Started

Where do users manage their tasks?

Anywhere. Administrators use Components > Next Task in the back office; regular users open the My Tasks menu item on the site. Both load the identical application against the same data.

Is Next Task free for every registered user on my site?

Yes. Every logged-in account whose roles allow it can use the app, with no per-user setup: on installation the Member role goes to Registered (and the other top-level groups) and Administrator to the administrators. What each person may do is decided by their roles (see Roles).

Does Next Task work on mobile?

Yes. The application is responsive from phone widths up; the navigation and the lists panel collapse into a drawer on small screens. On HTTPS sites it can also be installed on a phone like an app (see Installable app and offline use).

Sharing & Collaboration

Can I share a list with an entire usergroup?

Yes. In the Share dialog switch to the Groups tab and grant view or edit to any Joomla usergroup; every current and future member of that group gets access.

Do assignees need access to the list?

Yes. A task can only be assigned to someone who can reach its list: its owner, or a person or group the list is shared with (view is enough). Assignment opens nothing else: on a list shared with them to view, an assignee may complete and reopen the tasks assigned to them, and nothing more. If they lose access to the list, they are unassigned, and moving a task to a list its assignee cannot reach unassigns it.

Who can share a list?

Only the list's owner, if their role allows sharing. Someone whose role has "Change sharing on other people's lists" can do it on any list. Editors of a shared list can work its tasks but cannot change sharing. See Roles.

Dates & Recurrence

Can a task have several reminders?

One reminder per due date, for tasks with a time, sent at the due time or a set number of minutes before (the reminder lead time in Settings > System). Changing a task's due date arms a fresh reminder.

What happens when a recurring series ends?

When the rule's "after N times" count is exhausted or the end date passes, completing the last occurrence does not create a clone; the completed instance remains in the Completed section.

Do subtasks support dates?

Yes. Subtasks carry due dates and appear in Today and Overdue like other tasks, but they cannot repeat and cannot have subtasks of their own. When a repeating task creates its next occurrence, its subtasks come along, open again.

Emails

Which email address is used?

Joomla's global mail settings (System > Mail). Next Task sends through the CMS mailer, so SMTP, sendmail and PHP mail all work as configured.

Can I change the email texts?

The subjects and bodies are language strings (COM_NEXTTASKMAIL*), so they can be overridden with Joomla's Language Overrides without touching code.

Technical

Is there an API?

Yes: REST endpoints under /api/index.php/v1/nexttask/ for lists and tasks, authenticated with Joomla's standard API token. Create, update, delete, complete, move, restore and bulk actions are covered, with the same permissions as the app (see REST API).

Does uninstalling delete my data?

Yes. The package's uninstall removes all Next Task tables (and the demo data, if installed). Export anything you need first: a privacy export per user, or a database backup.

Which Joomla and PHP versions are supported?

Joomla 4.4 or newer, Joomla 5 and 6 included, on PHP 8.1 or newer, with MySQL 8 or MariaDB 10.4 or newer. The installer refuses older Joomla or PHP versions with a message.

Can I switch features off?

Yes. The App Manager switches the optional apps off for the whole site: the All tasks board, recurring tasks, sharing, reminders, the User Notes bridge, notifications, the Overview, the installable app and demo mode. Their data is kept (see App Manager).

Does it support languages other than English?

The front-end strings ship through Joomla's language system and respect Language Overrides out of the box; new translations can be added as standard Joomla language files without touching the app build.
