Troubleshooting
The app shows an empty screen or bounces back to the dashboard
- Debug mode is on. With
$debug = truein configuration.php, the system debug plugin can interfere with single-page apps mounted in the administrator. Turn debug off in System > Global Configuration > System and reload. - The session expired. The app detects session loss and shows a reload dialog; reload the page and log in again.
- Browser cache holds an old bundle. After an upgrade, force one hard reload (Ctrl+F5); assets are versioned per build, so this only ever affects the first visit after updating.
I do not see a shared list that was shared with me
- You are logged in with a different account. Sharing is per Joomla account; check the user menu.
- The share was granted to a group you are not in. Group shares resolve through your Joomla usergroups at the moment of each request — ask the owner to share with your user directly or fix your group membership.
- The list was deleted. Deleting a list removes its shares and tasks; there is no undo.
No reminder or digest emails arrive
- The Scheduled Tasks are not created or not running. Check System > Scheduled Tasks: the routines need to exist and show recent runs. Test them with Run Test (see Reminders and scheduled tasks).
- The routine runs but mail fails. Check System > Mail configuration and send a test mail; Next Task uses Joomla's standard mailer. Failed deliveries are logged in the Scheduled Task log.
- You opted out. Open the app's Settings screen and check that reminders, the digest (and its time) and assignment notifications are enabled for you.
- The task has no time. Due-time reminders only fire for tasks that have a date and a time; date-only tasks are covered by the digest instead.
A user cannot see the front-end menu item
- Access level. The menu item must be set to Registered or higher; check it in Menus > Main Menu > My Tasks > Access.
- The item was never created. It is not created automatically on install — see the Installation page for the two-minute setup.
Shared users see tasks but cannot edit them
- View-only share. The owner granted "Can view"; ask them to change it to "Can edit" in the list's Share dialog.
- Assignment is not access. On a view-only list, an assignee may complete and reopen the tasks assigned to them, nothing else. Editing needs an edit share.
- Their role. A role without Tasks > Edit keeps every list read-only for that person (see Roles).
REST API returns 401 or empty results
- Token plugin disabled. Enable Web Services - Next Task and API Authentication - Joomla Token in System > Plugins, and generate a token in the user's profile.
- Wrong header or user. The X-Joomla-Token header must carry the API token of the same user whose data you expect; the API enforces the identical permission ladder as the app.
- API application unreachable. Confirm /api/index.php is reachable on your host (some hosts need the api folder's rewrite rules copied like the site's).
A person sees "You have no Next Task role"
- No role applies to them. Their groups hold no role, and they have no direct one. Assign a role to their group or to them under Configuration > Roles (see Roles).
- The role is unpublished. An unpublished role counts as not assigned.
- A new top-level group. A group created after installation has no role until you assign one; groups below an existing group inherit its role.
A screen or menu entry is missing
- The app is switched off. Check the App Manager: All tasks, sharing, the Overview, notifications and the other optional apps disappear when switched off.
- The role does not allow it. Overview, Users, Manage, Settings > System, Roles and the App Manager each need their own permission.
"Install app" is not offered
- The site is not on HTTPS. Browsers install apps only from secure sites.
- The Installable App is switched off in the App Manager.
- The browser cannot install web apps. On iPhone and iPad use Share > Add to Home Screen. See Installable app.
